Community Service
I always like community service! I think it is fun that I can either interact with different people or enjoy the beautiful nature. Last year, I went to two community service - beach cleaning and tree planting.
I always believe that if I have the ability to do something for the community, I should try my best to do it. I benefited a lot from what others have contributed, as I get older and became more mature, I should gradually change my role to serve but not to be served.
I like out door community services, I love mother nature and I do not want to see that our environment is getting worse and worse. Although with the ever-advanced technology, our quality of life is getting better, deterioration of nature is an irreversible process. What I can do is to try my best to protect the environment from getting even worse.
1. Beach cleanup
I learnt that sometimes although we did not intend to throw away rubbish, our careless action could have a great impact to the environment. For example, when we were collecting rubbish on the beach, we picked up some plastic bags that were already torn. I think that they have already been there for a long time, perhaps several year, they still could not degrade. Even if these plastic bags got degraded, the chemical components released could be harmful for the wild animals as we also saw some dead fish near the beach. In addition, it took so much time and effort to pick up these rubbish and I think in places that there are not many tourists, cleaning might be done once several months or even years.
2. Tree planting
Another service that I went to is tree planting at Yuen Long. It was actually a tree planting for elderly and children and my duty was to assist in the process like distribution the trees and fertilizers. However, at last, there were several trees left and I finally got a chance to plant them! It was not as easy as I thought. I had to dig a deep hole first which was quite demanding. It was really sunny that day and as can seen from the last photo, I felt really hot and my face got really red at last. But it was still fun! And I knew that what I did was actually making an impact, although it was tiny. I will come back a few years later and see if my "tree baby" has already grown up or not.
Preventing is earlier than saving it actually. If people could try to prevent these things by thinking carefully about what the impacts are because of their actions, the earth will for sure be cleaner and greener. Community service is always fun for me. I am passionate in doing voluntary service and I want to try my best to give back to the society. I would like to join a service trip during my four-year university journey. I believe by that I can be more involved in the service and get to know more about the people and culture from that area.
