Volunteer @ Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve
I joined a volunteer service at Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve on 23 Feb. This community service was very different from others that it did not involve interacting with people directly. In contrast, we worked in nature, on a sunny and warm day.
1. Where are the butterfly?
The aim of this volunteer service was to help protecting the habitat in Fung Yuen. We carried some heavy stuffs as well as picked up tiny branches. When I first went to Fung Yuen, it was not like what I expected to be. I thought that there would be many colorful butterflies flying around. However, there were only a few butterflies since butterflies were not out at this season. I was quite disappointed at first but it still did not affect my passion for volunteering because the whether was so nice and the place was very beautiful.
2. Carrying heavy stuff
When we transferred the heavy stuff from one place to another for the first time, I was carrying one bag with two other girls. However, I saw a boy carrying a bag of heavy stuff alone and the string on his bag was untied that he could not handle it himself. I offered to help him and carried the bag with him until the end point. I think teamwork is really important here, even a strong boy may have trouble handling this situation. Teamwork can solve a problem much more efficiently.
3. I like volunteer service!
I personally think that volunteer service is a kind of fun. For example, this volunteer service provides me a chance to get closer to nature and away from the busy schedule and pressure at school. I remember that on a learning through service REDbird workshop, the speaker said that we can benefit by serving others. I got to know more amazing secrets about butterfly from this community service.
In addition, the guided person inspired me that he worked at Fung Yuen for 5 or 6 years since he was a university student.
Doing a one-time volunteer service does not take much time but being persistent in a volunteer service for several years is very difficult. He may sacrificed much of his own leisure time to Fung Yuen. I did not join many community service in high school but I will engage in more community service in the future and try my best to help to protect the environment and those in need.
PS: After this community service, I join CWS City Challenge community service and am going to flag selling day on Connect Service Learning Day. I have never tried flag selling, so I am quite curious about the process and looking forward to it!
