My Career Plan
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a hairdresser and I always played with my sister's hair. When I got older, I changed my idea but I was not sure what I wanted to be in the future. Before I came to university, I had never thought of majoring in mathematics. It sounds to be quite nerdy to major in mathematics. But gradually, I found it interesting and useful. Mathematics does not require lots of memorization, and this is the main reason that I like it. But what can I do if I major in math (in a track called financial mathematics and statistics)? Teacher? Definitely no. Mathematician? At least I need to get a PHD degree. So I had been thinking about what I could do for a long time. And finally, after doing some research on the internet and talking to my major advisor, I decided to put quantitative analyst as my ideal job. A quantitative analyst, or quant, is a person who specializes in the application of mathematical and statistical methods – such as numerical or quantitative techniques – to financial and risk management problems.
Last semester, I joined Math JobEx. After becoming member of it, it sends out internship information to me via email every week in the area I am interested in. But actually, I am planning to do internship next year as I feel that I do not have enough math background to do modeling or analyzing data. This summer, I plan to do UROP from the finance department about financial modeling. I believe that I can gain some modeling and analyzing experience from it and I'll see if I am really interested in it.
In REDbird, I did a career potential test and the ideal job that I selected was data analyst. The comparison of my brain map with that of an actual brain map of a data analyst showed that in general it was matched but I needed to be more innovating and focusing. Now that I know that where I can improve, I can work on these areas if I really want to become an analyst. But the first in summer, I will try out whether I have interest in it. Passion in my job is crucial as job is a life long matter.
