When I first applied to be a REDbird coach, all I wanted to do was to be a role model and to help the first year members. My REDbird coaches were like role models for me, they are so excellent that they can balance between both academic and extra-curricular activities. I really wanted to be someone like them. But how can I be a role model? I need to have outstanding personality traits, abilities, values etc. So I have to develop myself to be good enough to be a leader, a role model.
So, I started my REDbird journey like this. At first, I really did not expect that I could benefit and development so much from being a coach. How I am now is greatly different from how I was back to one year ago. I was more reserved and quite before, now, I try to be more extraverted and try to get out of my comfort zone. I learnt from my peers and all other REDbird coaches are excellent students in every areas! I will continue to develop myself to be a more balanced person and never stop learning from others!
Our vision as being a REDbird coach:
First time to be a coach, I learnt a lot about facilitation and leadership. In a discussion with first year members, a coach should no dominate the conversation and express a lot of ideas. Instead, a coach needs to listen actively and facilitate the flow of the conversation. This was really difficult for me at the beginning that I always wanted to give my suggestions and correct them immediately when their ideas were not likely to implement. However, from the training, I gradually learnt to help them discover a better way themselves by asking questions. This is the most important thing that I learnt from coaching.
