1. How did we come up with this idea?
For my second year project, it started from a dinner gathering among coaches. During dinner, a coach mentioned that he was going to Japan to attend a piano composition competition. Then, we started to discuss about holding a concert for HKUST students. We were so passionate about idea that after the training that night, we immediately formed our project group.
However, we were too optimistic at the beginning that we aimed at a huge project. We were thinking about introducing We Day, an annual "youth empowerment" event organized by the Free the Children charity which is held in cities across Canada and the United States. However, introducing an organization to a new country is not we can easily do. We would need to spend a lot of time and effort and there is also government issue. So after discussion, we decided to turn our project into a small scale one - a spring lunch party for REDbird first year member during idea competition.
2. Project rundown
Although the project became much smaller, we still needed to do a lot! The most important part was the project rundown. In only two hours, how can we organize a party such that people can have lunch as well as enjoying the entertainment? After consideration that the theme of our project is spring, we decided to include lily folding, music performance, balloon twisting and lucky draw. In the project, my role was the pic for venue setup, assisting members get seated, buying items and making lucky draw red packets.
3. My learning outcome
From this project, I learnt that a smart goal should be realistic, at first, we were expecting too much, but after doing some research, we got to know that it was impossible to do that. I think setting a realistic goal is really important that only if the goal is achievable then we can try hard to achieve it.
In addition, during the project discussion, as all the organizing committee members in my group were coaches, everyone wanted to take the lead, as a result, arguments resulted from disagreement inevitably happened. For example, during the discussion of musical performance, we could not reach a consensus on whether we should screen performers or not. What I have learnt from this project is that although we have our own ideas, we still have to carefully listen to others' idea and agree with it if it is really better than my idea. We should think more about the whole team but not what I myself want to do.
Another thing I learnt from this project is about efficiency. During the winter break, we had a Skype meeting. The skype meeting took more than two hours and at the end, we did not really get anything done. Actually, many meetings that I have been through in HKUST are inefficient, like we just talked and talked but did not get to the main point. This is something that I have to work on, as a leader, when the meeting is inefficient, how to switch the topic or conclude what ideas we have got and initiate a vote to select one of them. Many of the time, we were just continuing coming up with new ideas but not focusing on evaluating among all we got now, which one we should choose.
Above all, the project was fun and first year members really enjoyed it. In fact, we got a lot of help from REDbird like they booked the venue for us and also provided us the lunch. Even with this, holding a party was more difficult than I thought but I enjoyed working with my fellow coaches in my team! Everyone has a strong characteristic and the team is at its best when we consider everyone's strength and style.
